Work in Progres
The project focuses on research and development in an attempt to come up with a new craftsmanship skill to design and create precious jewelry by using 3D printing in polymers. Three sources of inspiration are in the background of the process: traditional Japanese art, Art Nouveau’s Lalique jewelry, and exotic creatures and plants in nature. In all of these I am fascinated by the combination of organic forms with patterns and mathematical order, and the complexity and richness existing alongside simplicity and harmony. The results of this phase present a kind of new raw material that combines organic forms and mathematical principles. The “molecular” material is made up of cells and layers, highlighted by transparency and gradations of color. Later I plan to develop it for use as smart material; form, color, and function will come from its internal structure. The shapes will evolve generatively into objects as they consider the jewelry’s connection to the body. Materials: PVB and gold Working techniques: a hybrid combination of digital technologies and traditional jewelry making, design, and programming in Rhino and Grasshopper; 3D printing in FDM technology on a home printer; experimental use of hardware and software to stretch the boundaries of technology and to expose the design and creative potential of disruptions, errors, and limitations of the machine
