Playful sun shades Shadows are nature’s animation. We follow and respond to them, and they protect us from the scorching sun. Reflection on interactions in the public space led me to take an in-depth look at the shaded areas around us, the random encounters they summon, and the severe shortage of shade in modern cities. With all this in mind, I designed a dynamic shading system for the beach, where the shadow becomes “active.” No longer a still byproduct of the construction that holds it, but rather its beating heart. The shadows move with the power of the wind, producing a spectacular visual display that allows static viewing or playful interactions. I believe that introducing movement and dynamism to urban spaces will generate interest and with that, encourage new and surprising interactions. Advisor: Aaron Lobaton
