Tracing Michigan is a book of images that represent my home and Birth State where I used to live for 18 years. I left Michigan to come to Israel in 2004 after high school, to achieve my dream to be a true Israeli patriot, to fulfill my Zionistic dreams. In 2019-2020 I enrolled in a Bookbinding course taught by Uri Gershuni. I have established a book Called Tracing Michigan, a place where I left but managed to trace back my childhood memories of a home I would remember. It gave me the opportunity to make a book in the course. I collect books of people and things that interest me and most of them are art/photography history books and well-known photographers and artists. I started to understand the concept, the idea of making a book and making a book into a product. Book Binding became `fascinating. I found a book from a secondhand bookstore and it had images of the architecture of Michigan. It gave me memories I would often trace back to my long-term memories and history. I would often relate to the book as a portrait of myself. The pages are mirror images, it reflects on me a lot. It is a big book and I like big things. I love the Color Blue, it’s the color that became an obsession and it’s the color that reflects how I feel. The Use of the color blue (cyanotype) Michigan is a Peninsula State surrounded by water all around. In the winters it can be very cold with lots of snow and the summers are hot but there would be lots of rain during the summer and it makes it cool off. Blue also represents my Zionistic movement, (Israel) also surrounded in different places with water, the Mediterranean Sea, dead sea, etc. I traced the architectural images with parchment see through papers and used the traced parchment paper as contact and would use watercolor paper 300 grams with emulsion (cyanotype) and expose them in a UV light. Therefore, I obtained an image of the traced architectural images and scanned them and formed it into a book. I have also used a brown version of cyanotype as well as another color I wanted to blend in the book and make something unexpected brown which represents sand/earth/tornadoes which would occur in Michigan during the summer. The Book Tracing Michigan took me a year to make. I did it during the Corona virus which has also had a lot of affect and influence in this book as well. Every page that is turned, every image looks almost the same but with different effects during different periods. I had a relationship with this book for each tracing are different times, day, situation, where I would trace in different surfaces.
