The mirror stage 2.0
In an image-saturated world that often feels like its own distorted copy of reality, my replicated portrayal calls for an act of introspection by mirroring our technological existence which converts us into a replicable image — a simulation of ourselves. Through an immersive study of the self-portrait and its derivatives, I examine the possibility of travelling back to the Lacanian "mirror stage" at a later age; a stage in which my consciousness seeks to reconnect to the rest of the world. Such is my departure point to explore my surrounding world of replicas using digital photography and 3D modeling. I engage in a process of duplicating reflections using various innovative digital media tools, thus transforming the image into an abstract graphical simulation. This process casts doubt upon photography’s claim of objectivity and challenges the viewer into searching for information on our ways of seeing. This encounter begs questions about the evolution of the digital world in the near future: what can be expected of our relation to the personal and to self-contemplation? Will we reassemble in a world capable of enhancing our relation to ourselves, or will we wane and disconnect?
