Video installation, sound In Mika Aya Azagi‘s work there is an attempt to trace initial and elusive moments, which reveal mysterious worlds when they arise in the subconscious. The material choices are often immediate and initial, and are a result of a given emotion or state of mind. In her search for balance she came to know that the connection to nature is significant and deep, and it relates to the interface between reality and the sublime. The issues that Azagi deals with are related to a chain of thoughts that emphasizes the return to nature – to virginity, to simplicity. The possibility of giving nature a full grip on life is a belief that characterizes Eastern cultures, and particularly it‘s inaction – "Daoism". The works are intuitive and minimalistic. They are not roughly edited, they are wordless, and emerge from subconscious activities. The body is trapped in the web of time, between life and death, and stimulates a state of stagnation and ebony. Nature stands on the opposite end, representing life and continuity. The eyes are the most important organs, and the lingering gaze throughout the video presents a particular moment that becomes eternal. Azagi‘s work communicates through movements on different axes of displacement and immobility – sleeping, awakens, dreams, life, and death.
