My name is Sarah, not Sārā
My name is Sarah, not Sārā as many mispronounce it. I’m the daughter of Mary, an Irish Catholic, and Lior, a Yemenite Jew. Born in Israel, I grew up most of my life on a kibbutz. Unlike the evident duality of the , there is no visual sign that marks me as a non-Jew. Yet beneath the surface, my hybrid identity always preoccupied me. The models I designed in this collection occur in the realm between two and three dimensions, and present the issue of multiple identities through the assembly and disassembly of complex geometrical structures. Each model starts as one square sheet of fabric, which I fold in endless ways to make complex formations. With each fold I embark on a fascinating search that reveals infinite possibilities for new configurations. The models fold in and out of themselves, almost madly. I chose to assert my presence by printing on each model cubist collages I created from my own portrait, using striking and contrasting colors.
