“Hekayti ma’ el-zaman” (My story with time)

Video installation; mixed media Around the age of five, I saw a framed portrait of my mother on her bedroom wall, with massive hair, thin eyebrows, loud makeup, and accessories. At that moment, I heard my mother humming in the background a song by the Tarab singer Warda AlJazaeriya. For a long time after that, I was sure that my mother was Warda herself. When I was thirteen, I saw the prophet Mohammad in my sleep. He was in the barren desert with nothing but him and a palm tree beside him. I asked elder sheikhs what it meant, and they explained that whomever dreams of him may get into heaven! My connection with Warda the singer and the palm tree resonates the distancing from my mother and from the religion I grew up with. However and in spite of the fact that my life has gone through many changes, the bond with them has never faded. *”Hekayti ma al-zaman”, the movie title and the song, sung and played by Warda AlJazaeriya in 1973.
