Divide by Two
Heat, shrinkage, embroidery Polyolefin, or as it is more commonly known – heat-shrink, has been used in the electronics industry for more than half a century for wrapping and insulating electronic components. When heated, it shrinks to half its original width. Focusing on polyolefin and its properties, the project reexamines the material while changing its use strategy. In the learning process, I chose to focus on the material’s contraction movement, to test and push its boundaries. Using sewing and embroidery in varying densities and directions that affect the shrinkage process, the material’s engineering properties were utilized to create unique structural strength and formal richness. The project presents a series of stools as a case study for controlling variation with embroidery, and to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a wide range of products. Advisor: Safi Hefetz
