    Alternative Grief Ceremony

The population growth rate along with the inefficiency of traditional burial, foreshadow a future in which the custom of burial will disappear, leaving a void to be filled with new mourning rites. The new grief rituals will be rooted in values characterizing existing rituals combined with contemporary values. The project stems from the observation of a grief ritual in contemporary culture – remembrance tattoos, linking it to the bio-hacking/body-modification movement to offer an alternative grief ceremony, in which skin from the dead person is embedded in the bodies of the living. This way, the mourning does not require physical space and continues to exist only as long as those who cherish the memory are alive. The expression of grief is always found on the bodies of the rememberers and summons a process of physical healing alongside the mental healing, while keeping alive something of the departed.
